The Lord Mayor's Pub, located on Main Street in Swords, County Dublin, was a prominent and historic landmark in the town for centuries. While it is no longer standing, its history is deeply intertwined with the development of Swords.
Early History and Name
The pub was famously established in 1668, making it one of the oldest public houses in the area. This long history made it a beloved and iconic structure in Swords. The pub's more recent name, "The Lord Mayor's," is a tribute to Joe Savage, a member of the Savage family who owned the pub for many years and who was made "Lord Mayor of Swords."
The Building and Its Features
The pub was well-known for its distinctive thatched roof, a feature that was added or enhanced by the Savage family in the 1980s and 90s to give it a more traditional, historic appearance. The pub was also quite large, with a fine function room upstairs that was a popular venue for live music, and a cellar bar that hosted traditional music sessions. It was situated at a significant location at the junction of Main Street and Forest Road, a site that was historically the location of a "turnpike" or toll barrier for coaches.
A Hub for Music and Social Life
For many years, The Lord Mayor's was a major destination for music lovers. It was known throughout Dublin as a great spot for live music, with many rock bands getting their start there. In later years, it also supported traditional Irish music, which was a big draw for locals. The pub also had a popular disco bar that was known for being difficult to get into on a busy night.
Closure and Demolition
In 2019, the owners announced the pub's closure, citing a difficult financial position. At the time, it was a major blow to the community, as the 350-year-old establishment was seen as an irreplaceable landmark.
Planning permission was later granted for the demolition of the pub to make way for a new apartment block with retail units on the ground floor. Despite community sentiment to retain the historic building, it was ultimately demolished. The site is currently slated for a new development, and its sale has been a significant news story in the Swords area.
