MULVILLE HIGHLIGHTS NEED FOR 33D DIRECT BUS IMPROVEMENTS, CAUTIONS OVER RISK OF FARE HIKES UNDER PRIVATE SECTOR PROVIDER
Paul Mulville, Social Democrats councillor, has stated his disappointment that the National Transport Authority are declining to expand and improve the 33d direct bus route from Portrane, Donabate via the Port Tunnel to the city centre, and have given a cautious welcome to the NTA’s plan to bring in a private contractor to run a similar service, highlighting possible fare increases under a privately run service.
Mulville stated: “I've kept a constant interest in the Dublin Bus 33D route from Portrane and Donabate direct to the Dublin City centre via the Port Tunnel. This is a vital route to and from Dublin for our residents at peak hours.
During the recent Bus Connects public consultation process, the Social Democrats and I made a series of interventions to stop the mooted cancellation of key direct services to Dublin city. Among the services that would have been lost was the 33d route.
I have continued to advocate for the importance of the 33D with the National Transport Authority. Rapid building development on the peninsula has increased demand on key routes, and this is only set to continue. I again recently had a question put to the Minister for Transport, Tourism and Sport regarding the need for more buses and increased frequency on the 33D.
In response, the National Transport Authority has indicated it has no plans to add to the 33D route. However, it has stated that it is considering an application from a private bus operator to provide a direct route to the city during peak hours.
This is welcome news if it genuinely means a marked improvement in access to the city, and if it's the case all will surely support it.
However, I am eager to pursue the matter with the NTA to make sure that this really is what is going on.
It would be very much against the interests of the peninsula if the plan here is to introduce a private operator on the same route as the 33D, and then eventually phase out the Dublin Bus service.
There is the risk that fares under a private operator would be set higher than current fares on the 33d Dublin Bus direct services, such as is the case with some other privately run direct bus routes in the area. This would amount to asking residents to pay extra for the kind of basic and accessible public transport that should be everyone's right, something I would vigorously oppose.
I will continue to investigate this and fight for public input into any decisions that are made, always with a view to improving and expanding frequent and affordable public transport services for local residents.”

Enterprise Rent-A-Car marks 20th anniversary by achieving target of planting 20,000 trees with final tree-planting in Swords
Nov. 28, 2017 - On Saturday November 25 at the Scahill family farm in Balheary, Swords, a group of Enterprise Rent-A-Car employees planted the last batch of a 20,000 tree-planting pledge to celebrate 20 years of operations in Ireland. The initiative is part of the company’s global pledge to plant 50 million trees in 50 years across Europe and North America.
In Ireland, Enterprise has partnered with the charity project, Trees on the Land (formerly One Million Trees in One Day), to deliver the Irish element of its global tree planting project. Earlier this year, Enterprise and Trees on the Land arranged for tree-planting projects at a number of sites across Ireland encompassing new native woodland and coppice, hedgerows, orchards, shelter belts and agroforestry.
The tree-planting initiative at the Scahill family farm in Swords saw some 20 Enterprise employees, led by Managing Director, George O’Connor, plant a range of new native hedgerow trees and heritage Irish apple varieties.
George O’Connor, said: “We are delighted to have achieved our target of planting 20,000 trees as part of our celebrations of 20 years in Ireland. As a company that cares about the communities where we operate, we are immensely proud of this achievement and we sincerely thank Aidan Scahill and his family for the opportunity to plant these Irish hedgerow trees. Hedgerows are hugely important for adding to the diversity of Ireland’s flora and fauna and we are only too happy that our efforts are helping to extend Ireland’s rich hedgerows here in Swords, County Dublin.
“I would like to sincerely thank all of the Enterprise employees who gave up their Saturday to help out and, of course, our partners at Trees on the Land for their expert co-operation on this project. I encourage other businesses across Ireland to get involved with the charity and help protect our country’s environment,” O’Connor said.
The Enterprise Rent-A-Car 50 Million Tree Pledge was launched in 2007 to celebrate the company’s 50th anniversary as a way of saying thank you to customers. It has been funded with a $50 million donation from Enterprise Rent-A-Car’s philanthropic arm, the Enterprise Rent-A-Car Foundation.

SWORDS GOLFERS QUALIFY FOR U.K & IRELAND FINALS
Swords golfers will be well represented at the U.K & Ireland Finals of the American Golf Championships this September after 3 pairings put in hugely impressive displays at regional qualifying. The pairs will now make their way to Ryder Cup venue The Belfry for the finals of the American Golf Ladies and Seniors Championships to battle it out in the American Golf Ladies’ and Seniors’ Championships.
In the Ladies Championship qualifier held at Roganstown Golf Club, Kay Farrell and Orla McGuiness beat the field with some ease as they recorded 40 points to take the title. Qualifying in second place were Marion Delaney and Doreen Bell, who more than held their own with a creditable 37 points. In the Seniors’ Championships John Brazil and Des Rooney, members at Swords Open Course needed to play the rounds of their lives to come in with 44 points, beating the field by just a single point.
All three pairs will now join qualifiers from all over the UK and Ireland in front of Sky Sports’ cameras at the Belfry Grand Finals where they will compete across two days to be crowned American Golf Champions. This win also puts them in contention for the Tournament of Champions in Mauritius, should they succeed at the iconic Midland venue.
“Our Championship events have proven incredibly popular over recent years,” comments Daniel Gathercole, Director of Marketing and Communication at American Golf. “We love to see competitive golf played with a smile on golfer’s faces so we can’t wait to welcome all our qualifiers to the Belfry to have a great time and do battle for the title.”
Local American Golf Manager John Storey from the HYPERLINK "http://storeblog.americangolf.co.uk/dundrum/" Dundrum store commented, “It’s great to know that we’ll have golfers representing Co. Dublin at the Championship finals. We’ve got a fantastic golfing community in the region and I’m delighted that American Golf can give local golfers the chance to play at an iconic venue like the Belfry against qualifiers from all over the U.K and Ireland.”
Entry to all of the American Golf Championships is absolutely free and is part of the retailer’s drive to promote the game of golf and get more people out playing golf more often.

Here's some of the top topics the people of Swords like to complain about, well at least these are the topics sent to this site the most.
Graffiti - This is a problem for a number of years and has gotten a lot worse recently. In the first two weeks of May the North Street area of the town has been lashed out of it. Almost every premises on North street has been hit, along with The Chapel Lane and the car park at the rear of the Star Pub. Lots of photos. have been sent to the site but putting up the pictures here might encourage the juvenile delinquent who is responsible to continue his rampage. illegal parking - This is another topic that people are constantly complaining about. whether it's taxis in a queue outside peoples homes waiting for a fare, or private cars parked in the taxi rank at Chapel Lane, or taxis plying for hire illegally outside pubs and hotels, or fast food delivery drivers parked on footpaths outside Chinese chippers and Pizza shops,,,the list goes on and on.
These parking infringes usually only take place at night, and are not thought to be as serious as day time parking infringes by the powers to be. Hence, you'll never see parking attendants working after 7pm. It's not just a Swords issue, but nationwide. The photo shows private cars parked in the taxi rank at Chapel Lane at 10-30 on a recent Saturday night. |

The Star Pub Is For Sale
The Star Pub on Main Street Swords is for sale. The asking price is €1.5 million. The sale is by ''Private Treaty'' and that's the way most property is sold in Ireland, excluding houses. If several people are interested in buying a property, the selling agent may suggest a closed or private tender, whereby written or oral bids must be submitted by a set time on a ‘best and final offer’ basis. Normally in such cases, the highest bidder secures the property, but not always. The Star Pub is being sold as a ''Going Concern''. A going concern is a business that functions without the threat of liquidation for the foreseeable future, usually regarded as at least within 12 months. It implies for the business the basic declaration of intention to keep running its activities at least for the next year, which is a basic assumption to prepare financial statements considering the conceptual framework of the IFRS. Hence, the declaration of going concern means that the entity has neither the intention nor the need to liquidate or curtail materially the scale of its operations. Swords Councillors Want Closed-circuit television cameras
Cllr. Joe Newman and Cllr. Duncan Smith have placed a motion to the Fingal County Council Local Area asking the manager to introduce Closed-circuit television cameras around Swords Castle and park, in the wake of the recent attack on American visitors to the area. Comment, Anybody who knows Swords Town Park will already know that there are a number of Closed-circuit television cameras in that area already. They have been there since work started on the upgrade of the castle. If more cameras are required for Swords perhaps they could be placed on the Chapel Lane to deter the large scale brawls which take place there most Saturday night / Sunday mornings when the Russian club closes. |
The Star is being sold because the Taylor Family who has owned the pub for over 100 years are retiring from the pub trade.

The Cock Tavern Pub Closed Down
The Cock Tavern Pub on Main Street Swords closed down on Tuesday 26th of May. It's unclear at the moment if the closure is permanent. At lunchtime on Tuesday a couple of vans pulled up outside The Cock Tavern and alcohol was loaded into the vans.
Any customers who were drinking in the pub were told to leave the premises. The pub is owned by The Smyth Family. There are seven full time barmen working in the Cock. The pub has experienced a fall off in customers in recent times due to the recession, people drinking at home, and other punters changing pubs. On Wednesday 27th of May the furniture and fixtures were taken out from the pub and loaded into a lorry. |
